When nine black teenagers tried to start at Central High School in 1957 they were turned away by armed Arkansas National Guard troops and a very angry crowd who did not want the school to be desegregated.
Birmingham Police Chief Bull Connor
When the SCLC organised a campaign of non-violent protest against segregation in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963 involving high school students, Police Commissioner Bull Connor turned high pressure fire hoses and police dogs on them.
Medgar Evers killed
Medgar Evers, who worked for the NAACP in Jackson, Mississippi, was shot and killed by a member of the Mississippi While Citizens' Council as he walked from his car to his front door on 12th June 1963.
Sunday School bombing
On 16th September 1963 three members of the Ku Klux Klan set off a bomb in the largest African American church in Birmingha, Alabama. Four young black girls were killed.
