From January to May 1963 Martin Luther King led a non-violent campaign against segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. This not only resulted in the desegregation of public facilities there, it put pressure on Congress and the President of the United States to make a law specifically making segregation illegal.
March on Washington
On 29th August 1963 more than 200,000 people marched in Washington D.C. to show their support for the Civil Rights Bill that Congress was considering. Rosa Parks was a special guest and Martin Luther King made his now-famous 'I have a dream..' speech, outlining his powerful vision for the future.
Nobel Peace Prize
Martin Luther King Jr. was the youngest person to ever be awared the Nobel Peace Prize when he won it in 1964 at the age of 35 in regonition of what non-violent strategies had achieved.
Assassination
While he was in Memphis supporting rubbish collectors who were on strike, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot on 4th April 1968 on the blacony at the motel he was staying in.
